Best of Mississippi Score: 4.94 out of 5

There’s a certain feeling you get when you walk into a place where people are happy to see you. Shoulders relax. Conversation comes easily. You feel welcome before you ever sit down.

At Oxford Veterinary Clinic, that feeling starts at the front desk—and carries throughout the practice.

Owner and veterinarian Dr. Royann Leflore has built a team around a simple idea: relationships matter. Knowing the person holding the leash is part of knowing the animal at the other end.

The clinic’s motto is “Where pets are family.” Meet the people inside, and you begin to understand what that means.

    The welcome starts with Carol

Carol Gray at Oxford Veterinary Clinic
Carol Gray, a familiar face welcoming families to Oxford Veterinary Clinic.

For many clients, Carol Gray is the first familiar face through the door.

A longtime Oxford resident, Carol spent her teaching career working with kindergarten children in Lafayette County schools. Now retired from education, she brings that same patient, welcoming presence to the clinic’s front desk.

She greets clients, helps them check out, and sets the tone for the visit. There’s something reassuring about being welcomed by someone with deep roots in the community—someone who understands the value of making people feel comfortable.

Carol’s classroom days may be behind her, but caring for families is still part of her day.

    Familiar names, familiar smiles

Alex, veterinary technician at Oxford Veterinary Clinic
Alex helps bring personal attention and a familiar smile to each visit.

That welcome continues with Alex and Rylee Butler, members of the veterinary care team who help support the doctors and care for patients.

Ask what makes them special, and the answer quickly becomes personal. They know clients’ names. They remember their pets. They bring smiles and an easygoing manner to the daily work of the clinic.

Those details matter when you’re bringing in an anxious dog, carrying a nervous cat, or worrying about a change in your pet’s health. A familiar face gives you someone to talk to and a little less to feel uneasy about.

Together, Alex and Rylee help give the practice the friendly, small-town atmosphere that feels right at home in Oxford.

    Meet the doctors

Dr. Royann Leflore, owner and veterinarian at Oxford Veterinary Clinic.

Dr. Royann Leflore and Dr. Jessica Shumaker combine medical knowledge with the ability to make people feel at ease.

Their Southern warmth comes through in conversation: approachable, gracious, and comfortable talking with clients like people they know. They make room for the relationships that develop when families entrust their animals to the same veterinary team over time.

Dr. Leflore’s interest in animals began long before veterinary school. She grew up on a family farm, raised cattle and show pigs, and participated in 4-H. She earned her veterinary degree from Mississippi State University in 2006 and spent six years operating a practice in the Mississippi Delta before joining Oxford Veterinary Clinic.

Today, as the clinic’s owner, she helps shape a practice where professional care and personal connections go hand in hand.

Pet owners describe the personal attention

That sense of connection also appears in Google reviews reproduced on Pet Insurance Review.

One reviewer describes the team’s efforts to make a senior dog comfortable. Another recalls visiting Oxford with a seriously ill dog and finding help from Dr. Leflore, who reviewed the animal’s records and showed compassion toward both the patient and the worried family.

Other comments describe caring staff and personal connections with pets and their owners. These individual experiences offer a glimpse into the relationships families have formed with the practice.

    Comfortable visits, comprehensive care

Small touches contribute to the atmosphere, including televisions in the waiting and exam areas that help pass the time.

One routine annual visit described for this feature took about 15 minutes from arrival to departure. Every appointment is different, but the experience reflected an appreciation for a visit that felt both comfortable and efficient.

The clinic provides care for dogs and cats, with services including wellness exams, vaccinations, dental care, surgery, internal medicine, in-house laboratory testing, digital radiology, and laser therapy. Learn more about the team and services at Oxford Veterinary Clinic.

Oxford Veterinary Clinic offers payment options through Cherry, CareCredit, and Scratchpay, giving families additional ways to manage veterinary expenses. Clients can ask the team about available plans, eligibility, and terms.

    A little like coming home

The feeling has been compared to arriving at Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving: you’re welcomed, you’re comfortable, and you’re around people who care.

Few people look forward to needing a veterinarian. Knowing the people who will greet you makes returning easier.

From Carol’s welcome to Alex and Rylee’s familiar smiles, and from Dr. Leflore to Dr. Shumaker, the people are central to this clinic’s appeal.

For its welcoming atmosphere, locally owned character, and emphasis on personal relationships, Oxford Veterinary Clinic is a Best of Mississippi Staff Pick.

Chicken tenders, homemade ranch, unforgettable Texas cheese fries, and a welcome that keeps me coming back.

Some places make choosing lunch easy. For me, Southern Coop is one of them.

When somebody asks where I like to eat lunch in Oxford, Mississippi, this locally owned restaurant is always near the top of my list. The food is excellent, the people are friendly, and the whole place feels welcoming. It’s somewhere you can enjoy a quick lunch, catch a game, or get a few buddies together and stay awhile.

There’s one thing I would plan around: the crowd. Southern Coop stays busy—and after eating there, it’s easy to understand why.

Start with the chicken tenders—and don’t forget the ranch

In my opinion, Southern Coop serves the best chicken tenders in Oxford, Mississippi.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy chicken here. You can order traditional wings or boneless wings and explore different sauces. But sometimes the simplest combination is the one that brings you back: good chicken tenders and homemade ranch.

That ranch deserves its own mention. It’s one of those little things that takes a meal from good to something you start thinking about before your next visit.

If you’re trying Southern Coop for the first time, chicken tenders with ranch would be an excellent place to start.

Two more favorites: the quesadilla and Texas cheese fries

As much as I love the tenders, they aren’t the only reason I go.

The chicken bacon ranch quesadilla is wonderful. It’s one of my favorite things to order, and an easy recommendation if you want something beyond wings or tenders.

Then there are the Texas cheese fries.

    They are unbelievable.

When I read another diner praising them, I knew exactly what he meant. I can personally back up that recommendation. They deserve a spot in the conversation right alongside the chicken and homemade ranch.

The sandwiches are great, too. The pizzas seem to be getting plenty of attention lately, although I haven’t tried one myself yet. I’ll leave a personal verdict on those for another visit.

James and Jennifer Hudson make you feel welcome

Good food matters, but so does the way you’re treated.

Owners James and Jennifer Hudson are two of the reasons I love Southern Coop. They’re personable, welcoming, and likely to come over and talk with you while you’re there.

That personal connection makes a difference. You get the feeling you’re visiting a place where the owners are glad you came—and want you to enjoy yourself.

The staff has always been friendly when I’ve visited, too. Together, they give Southern Coop the warm, locally owned atmosphere that keeps me coming back.

Cleanliness—even the details people don’t mention

Southern Coop is consistently clean when I visit.

And yes, I’m going to mention the bathrooms.

People sometimes overlook that detail when talking about a restaurant, but I notice it. Southern Coop does a really good job keeping its bathrooms clean. Along with the dining area, it’s something I appreciate every time I’m there.

    Catch a game—or play a round

With TVs around the restaurant, you can keep up with your favorite teams while you eat. That makes Southern Coop a good place to settle in when there’s a game on.

There’s also another reason to bring your friends: golf simulators you can reserve.

Get a few buddies together, hit golf balls into the screen, play a virtual round, and enjoy something to eat while you’re playing. It gives you a way to turn lunch into an afternoon together.

Contact the restaurant before your visit to check simulator availability, reservation details, and pricing.

    What other diners are saying

My experience is only one perspective. When checked on October 29, 2026, Southern Coop’s Google listing showed 4.7 out of 5 stars across 330 reviews.

Braydon Shanklin praised the wings, generously sized tenders, and Texas cheese fries with queso. He was less enthusiastic about the loaded potato salad, showing that even a happy customer can have different favorites.

Nicolle Usher described attentive service and hot food during a busy postgame visit. John Harmon also highlighted a staff member’s kindness. Google’s review highlights mention homemade ranch and friendly service—two things I appreciate myself.

These are individual experiences, but they add context to my recommendation. Read Southern Coop’s Google reviews.

The one drawback: finding a seat

If I have one slight negative to mention, it’s the limited seating.

Southern Coop can get packed, and finding a table during the rush can be difficult. My advice is to plan your lunch around the busiest stretch.

I’d aim for around 11 a.m., before the noon rush, or between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Those are my suggestions for a better chance at a quieter visit, rather than a guarantee of an open table.

Dinner is another story. In my experience, Southern Coop does a tremendous evening business and can stay busy all night. Give yourself some extra time.

Why Southern Coop earns our pick

For me, it comes down to the whole experience.

The chicken tenders are outstanding. The homemade ranch makes a simple meal memorable. The chicken bacon ranch quesadilla is wonderful, and the Texas cheese fries are worth getting excited about.

Add friendly service, clean surroundings, owners who make you feel welcome, and the chance to watch a game or play a little simulator golf, and you have a place that offers plenty of reasons to return.

Southern Coop earns my personal rating of 4.91 out of 5—and my pick as one of the best places to eat lunch in Oxford, Mississippi.

Go hungry. Try the ranch. And if you can, beat the crowd.
